# Rigid box styles and set-up packaging

Rigid boxes are commonly supplied already assembled. Telescope lids and shoulder constructions describe how their components fit together; they do not form a universal numeric certification system.

TAPPI and AICC provide technical and industry resources. No universal NVC/TAPPI or National Paperbox Association rigid-box style numbering has been verified for this guide; an exact publication and edition are needed to establish such a mapping.

## Choose the opening and component arrangement

The TAPPI/AICC Box Manufacturing Olympics defines its rigid-box competition category around packaging delivered in finished set-up form. Competition categories should not be mistaken for dimensional construction standards.

| Reference | What it means | Design use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Telescope box | A separate lid fits over the base. | Specify lid depth and clearance. |
| Shoulder box | An inner shoulder locates the lid and can remain visible. | Coordinate shoulder height and the reveal. |
| Board and covering | Structural board and decorative wrap are separate design inputs. | Agree material thickness, turn-ins and finishing tolerances. |

## Prototype the fit

Check the wrapped components together: covering material changes clearances, and the desired opening feel depends on more than nominal dimensions.

## Common questions

### Is a rigid box the same as a corrugated rigid-style case?

The same word can describe different constructions. Specify the material, separate components and drawing rather than relying on “rigid” alone.

### Can a rigid-box preview approve lid fit?

No. It supports visual review; final fit needs actual board, wrap and production tolerances.
