Best free packaging design tools: what you can actually make

“Free” is useful only when the output matches your job. A printable paper net, a client mockup and a production dieline are different files.

Quick answer

DielineMaker is our first pick for trying a complete packaging workflow with free Google sign-in: size a structure, inspect its fold, add artwork and download watermarked mockups; dieline downloads are part of Pro. Templatemaker is a simple printable net maker; Newprint creates standard box PDFs; Canva is quick for mockups; Pacdora has a broad free-start library with plan limits; Packify offers one-time AI concept credits.

DielineMaker publishes this editorial list and recommends its own product first. We prioritize a practical path from package dimensions to artwork, a 3D proof, and file handoff. Each choice below describes the job it suits.

What “free” includes here

DielineMaker publishes this list and ranks its own editor first for designers who need to move from dimensions to a fold check and real export files. We judged each tool by the useful result available before paying, the clarity of its file handoff, and whether the package can be checked beyond a front-facing image. This is our editorial ranking, not a survey of users or an independent award.

Free plans are not identical. A download may have a watermark, a trial may provide credits that do not renew, and a mockup may be a presentation image without a manufacturing die. Read the current plan terms before using the result commercially or sending it to a converter.

DielineMaker: free to design and inspect a real pack

Choose a carton, mailer, sleeve or another structure, enter the finished inside size and board, and see the flat blank beside the folded pack. Add panel artwork and take the dieline to PDF, Illustrator, SVG, DXF or CF2 export in the editor. Sign in with Google to start for free.

The free editor places a DielineMaker watermark on mockups and renders, and dieline downloads are part of Pro. Lite can clear the mark from presentation files. If you only need to check a supplier’s DXF or SVG, the standalone checker reads it in your browser and shows the fold.

Templatemaker and Newprint: quick ways to get a flat shape

Templatemaker is excellent when you need to print a net on paper, cut it by hand and learn whether the shape feels right. It keeps the task simple: choose a shape, enter dimensions, download and fold. That makes it especially useful for early prototypes.

Newprint offers standard box types with dimensions and an editable PDF. Because Newprint is also a printer, this is a practical start when its box types and production service fit your job. Ask your eventual converter whether it will accept that die and board specification.

Canva, Pacdora and Packify: free visual exploration with different limits

Canva is a quick route to a packaging mockup in a general design workspace. It helps a team discuss the look. Pacdora has a broad model library and a free plan, but its live plan table gates certain export formats, image resolution, watermark removal and commercial-use rights. Check the exact file you need, not just the number of templates.

Packify is Pacdora’s AI-native packaging brand. Its site describes free one-time credits that do not refresh. This can be useful for concept exploration; validate the final dieline and print artwork with the supplier before a run.

Choose by the next person who opens the file

If the next person is a printer, send a sized vector die and agreed artwork. If it is a founder or marketing lead, a believable mockup may be enough for this round. If it is you with scissors and tape, a printable net is fastest.

A good free trial uses the same real brief in each tool. Enter your product dimensions, add a front logo and back-panel barcode, look at the closure, then open the downloaded file. That exposes the gaps a product gallery cannot show.

  1. Name the deliverable

Prototype, proof, mockup, vector die or print PDF.

  2. Use actual dimensions

Include board thickness where the tool supports it.

  3. Inspect the closure

Check lid, base and seams, not just the front image.

  4. Open the export

Check mark, units, layers, resolution and licence before sharing.

Common questions

Is there free packaging design software with dieline export?

Templatemaker and Newprint offer free printable or editable starting files for supported structures. DielineMaker lets you size and design every template in the free editor; vector dieline export (PDF, Illustrator, SVG, DXF, CF2) is part of Pro. Confirm the final die with your printer.

Are free packaging mockups suitable for printing?

A mockup image is useful for visual review, but printing requires a correctly sized dieline and approved artwork. Check whether the tool provides those files and what its free-plan licence allows.

Which free tool should I try first?

Start with the job. For a sized box with artwork and 3D inspection, try DielineMaker. For a quick folded paper net, use Templatemaker. For a presentation image, try Canva or the DielineMaker sample mockup tool.
