Card and board-game packaging guide

Start with a finished deck or a representative component set. Card count alone does not determine box depth: the stock, finish and any wrap change the stack. For games, map the board, cards, pieces and rulebook before choosing compartments.

Start with a product brief

  • Measure the finished deck stack, including sleeves or wrap if supplied.
  • Lay out every game component and the folded rules or board.
  • Check access to the cards, lid clearance and how the packed set moves during handling.

A supplied product model provides artwork areas. A packaging structure provides the corresponding dieline. Check the individual template page before preparing a production handoff.

Materials and supplier checks

Match the selected carton or rigid-box material to the supplier’s measured caliper. Keep card stock and box stock as separate specifications. A rounded card graphic or box render does not define the finishing tool or cutting tolerance.

Have the publisher approve content, identifiers and age or safety information where applicable. Approve print proofs and a fully packed assembly sample before production.

Common questions

Can I calculate a card box depth from the number of cards?

Use the measured finished stack whenever possible. Card caliper, coating, sleeves and wrap all affect the packed depth. Check the resulting fit with a finished sample.

Does a game-box template include the printed game contents?

It describes the selected box or component. Prepare card faces, rules and other contents as their own deliverables, then verify that the complete set fits.
